Top 10 Lehigh Valley Concerts Of 2014: Tom Petty, Eagles, Keith Urban, The Killers And More

When it comes to the stories of the year in music in the Lehigh Valley, actually is one.

The buzz of the new $ 177 million arena downtown Allentown drowned everything else through the calendar year - starting with speculation of what acts reserves, the enthusiasm with the announcement of the Eagles as the first show, and even uproar when both Rascal Flatts and Cher canceled.

When the show opened Eagles local September 12, which was more than a concert - it was an event. It was definitely an uplifting evening for Allentown, not only for music but also because of the excitement. The capacity crowd was electric.

Of course, there were other great stories they did not focus on the Seventh and Hamilton streets. The headquarters SteelStage home of Bethlehem Musikfest festival had its second best attendance ever - probably the result of its strong alignment. Tribune The Great Allentown Fair had a year of attendance down, but the quality of their performances was high: Two of the shows that our Top 10 of the year is done.

Sands Bethlehem Event Center had perhaps the biggest in three years, The Killers name and a year of concerts of high quality.

But opening PPL Center, with artists like Neil Diamond and Nickelback to come, changed the paradigm for concerts in the Lehigh Valley.

I saw more than 100 concerts in Lehigh and Northampton County locations this year. Here were my favorites.

1. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, PPL Center, September 16

the Eagles was the perfect show to open PPL Center Allentown. But Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers was the perfect act for second event of the arena. Or anything beyond that.

While the Eagles played a set that was pleasantly accurate restoration of all their hits, Petty played a more raucous spectacle that often shook, not relieved, the crowd nearly exhausted.

Petty and the Heartbreakers six men tore through an 18-song, an hour and 45 minutes long, with an intensity that sometimes took them outside the lines. It was for the sake of change songs, but in a way that suggests confidence he knew, playing with abandon, were good enough to challenge the comfort of the songs.

2. The Eagles, PPL Center, September 12

ultimately, the Eagles could have been the perfect opening act for shiny new PPL Center of Allentown.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group - was once a powerful force in music that sold 60 million albums in the 1970s and became the third best-selling band of all time - was on tour after only one studio album in 35 years.

That put the band in the same situation as Allentown - a city that is decades away from their glory years and is seeking to reassert itself.

Both were quite impressive in the first event of the sand.

The concert lasted for 21/2 hours at 20 minute intermission. When the full band playing the hits came, the Eagles were really impressive.

3. Keith Urban, Musikfest, August 10

Bethlehem Musikfest this year was blessed with an almost perfect climate concert, with cool summer nights. But on the last night of the festival headliner Keith Urban heats things up with a very entertaining night of summer songs that were hot but as windy as the night air blowing through the sand Steel Stage.

Playing to a full house of more than 6600 (only sellout Festival 10 days), Urban was lively and energetic through a show that included 24 songs in just over two hours.

He sank deep into his pit 15 # 1 hits (he played 13 of them). The music swirled and heated to songs with wild, fiery guitar solos prolonged. "Night amazing! Thank Bethlehem," he told the crowd. And so it was.

4. The Killers, Sands Bethlehem Event Center, May 15

Three songs in the concert of The Killers at Sands Bethlehem Event Center, it was clear that something special was happening.

The band was open - open - the show with a boost, barreling one of his greatest hits release, the successful alternative No. January 2006 "When You Were Young" in the auditorium yet fully illuminated.

This was a band on top of their game. And on a good night, to boot.

With an 18-song, 90-minute show, and the murderers got Sands Bethlehem Event Center's second birthday party setting - perhaps the best show of the place has seen.

Almost every song was great, and performs impressively. And concert in such a small room - The Killers normally play places four times the size of the event center - the energy and intensity of the music was just that much more.

5. Lady Antebellum, Allentown Fair, August 28

A day after grandstand crowd of the Great Fair Allentown saw a musical act, Motley Crue, disappointingly limp away on his farewell tour, he was a musical act at the peak of his prowess in an almost perfect show: Lady Antebellum.

Since opening - his recent single "Compass" beginning with a muffled drum, tinkling mandolin and singer warm, rich voice of Hillary Scott - which was an almost perfect night for country music trio.

In a show of 85 minutes covering 20 songs, including Lady Antebellum each of his 14 Top 10 songs, although some in abbreviated form. That meant that the whole show was full of good songs.

6. John Fogerty, Sands Bethlehem Event Center, July 18

The former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman / guitarist / songwriter John Fogerty played many of the same successes of Creedence Clearwater Revisited, the lineage band had played 18 months earlier.

The difference was that in the hands of Fogerty, songs occasionally changed and played with unbridled intensity that made a moot point accuracy.

In a game that lasted less than two hours, Fogerty played only five songs from his solo career, which now extends to 40 years - literally 10 times tenure CCR. But, like the way Bob Dylan plays his own expansive catalog, Fogerty apparently considers that the songs and the living entities, and plays them as if they are fresh, not relics.

7. Jackson Browne, State Theatre, Easton, August 9

Even when the singer Jackson Browne was young, his songs take a deep melancholy; kind words someone exploring the soul. Therefore, it should be no surprise that now, almost 66 and playing a solo exhibition spanning career at the State Theatre in Easton, plagued Brown would have a set of those songs.

And he did. And with the added element of age - both yours and the capacity crowd - those songs cut deep into a show that included 25 songs in two sets totaling nearly 21/2 hours (30 minutes in the middle).

Browne's voice is very well preserved. Their voices were mostly midrange largely as strong as they did in their best records of more than 30 years, with a weariness of the wise world added.

The show could have been even better: Jackson did not play many of his biggest hits.

8. Tegan and Sara, Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks, Bethlehem, June 23

There was more than a little dismayed when Canadian twin sister duo Tegan and Sara released their latest album, "heartthrob", a year ago. The concern was that his 80 synth-heavy 'new-wave environment was too much of a change in their sound indie pop.

Excellent show the couple in the Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks in Bethlehem, the second in a series of summer concerts paid back in place, allay these concerns.

The 21-song, 90-minute set showed that not only the new songs represent Tegan and Sara at its best, but not too different from previous material better partner.

9. Judas Priest and Steel Panther, PPL Center, October 15

basically, what makes heavy metal music so successful - and lasting - is its simplicity: three chords on guitar slashing, aggressive vocals and basic themes. Despite its reputation double intricate guitar attack and operatic vocals, British metal gods Judas Priest has the basic right to third concert of PPL Center.

In a 16-song, 90-minute show, and the band played a lot of these signature elements of showmanship - frontman / singer Rob Halford changed clothes, jackets or at least eight times. But were the fundamentals that made the show. The game spread by the band's career, extending over 40 years.

Opener Steel Panther was laughing loud funny - not only for his brilliant offensive songs, but for its between-song patter was equally offensive.

10. Hunter Hayes, Allentown Fair, August 30

during most of the last decade, country music aimed at young listeners it was neither good nor really country, and even worse when performed live.

Hunter Hayes change that. He is a talented singer and musician whose even better live entertainment, rather than being silly extravagances overexcited, they are real experiences of energetic concerts. And his music is really country.

Hayes played an 18-song show hour and 40 minutes. From the opening title track from his new album "Argument", he jumped around the stage, taking a walk on a catwalk or jump from one monitor. It was, dare we say, Springsteen-esque in its energy.

Honorable Mentions: Flogging Molly, Sands Bethlehem Event Center, November 29; Drive By Truckers, Musikfest Cafe, October 22; Avett Brothers, Musikfest, August 7; Wynonna, Sands Bethlehem Event Center, June 28.

The Eagles Share Their Legendary History With Salt Lake City Crowd

The Eagles swooped in Salt Lake City and gave the crowd near capacity at the Energy Solutions Arena a history lesson than three hours on the band itself.

Opening Song »The night began as Glenn Frey and Don Henley walked on stage with acoustic guitars in hand and played" Saturday Night "the second album of the band," Desperado ". Frey then gave a quick tutorial on how the band was formed and - to a roar of approval from the audience - Bernie Leadon introduced, which was a founding member of the band in 1972 and joined for this tour. The three original members sat on stools and cases of equipment and performed "part here this morning," the debut album of the band, "Eagles".

By the time the band reached the fourth song, "Witchy Woman", bassist Timothy B. Schmit and guitarist Joe Walsh had joined the group to complete the rest of the lineup for the first half of the series.

Highlights »For the intermediate time arrived, the band had played 12 songs from their first four albums, including crowd favorites" Already Gone "," Lyin 'Eyes "and" Best of My Love ", which shows the tight vocal harmonies and country rock with dyes that made the band famous.

After the break, the Eagles launched their successes more up-tempo and brought audience members to their feet with hits such as "Heartache Tonight", "Those Shoes" and "The Long Run". Walsh and his guitar work is presented largely in the second half of the performance, with the band playing his solo hits "In the City" and "Life has been good." Walsh quirky personality was on full display as he traded licks with Steuart Smith, who had taken the place of Leadon for the second half of the series. A rousing rendition of "Life in the Fast Lane" closed the second half of the show.

Encore "The band returned to the stage for the first encore and the crowd went wild as the first note of" Hotel California "rang through the arena. Over the next seven minutes, the crowd took on a trip to the legendary hotel, punctuated by Walsh and Smith dueling guitar solos that bring the song to a close.

For the second encore, The Eagles returned as Leadon launched into one of his biggest hits, "Take it Easy". Members of the audience rose to their feet singing and dancing along to every word. The last song of the night was "Desperado", the perfect way to relax a wonderful evening of music from a band that has suffered its share of ups and downs through the years. Increasing the lights, Frey, Henley, Schmit, Leadon and Walsh returned to the stage to thank the audience. But it was the audience that wanted to say thanks for three hours of history, music, and a few laughs along the way.

Rolling Stones, Eagles Shows Add Extra Seats

Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger on stage in Stockholm last month (AP).

Fans of the Eagles and the Rolling Stones were lost in Mt Smart Stadium tickets to the bands' shows have another chance.

Others are adding 6,000 seats to host concerts rock veterans groups.
They are in the top bracket to the south on the other end of the arena from the stage.

Tickets for the seats, which go on sale through Ticketmaster at noon on Thursday, August are $ 165.55 for the Stones show and $ 148.30 for the Eagles.
The Stones are playing a show once at Mount Smart, on 22 November, having postponed their tour of Australasia in March, after the death of the girlfriend of Mick Jagger, fashion designer L'Wren Scott.

The Eagles are playing at the stadium on March 14 and March 15 next year.

The promoter of both shows, managing director Michael Gudinski Frontier Touring said the demand for tickets was unprecedented.

"No more shows started looking at possible options that could increase production capacity, but had thought the numbers would likely be minimal.

"When Auckland Stadiums suggested additional seats were delighted? Being able to accommodate 6,000 fans per show was beyond our wildest imaginations who would have thought the biggest shows of the year could be bigger"

The 6000 additional seats are being purchased by the regional body council facilities for the U-20 World Cup.

A spokesman for Regional Facilities Auckland said that the additional seats are part of a contract between FIFA and QBE (North Harbour Stadium) for the World Cup U-20 Cup in May next year.

The spokesman did not say how the seats would cost, but said it received capital funds for the purchase when the regional facilities assumed QBE Stadium in May this year.

"Regional Facilities is conducting a confidential competitive procurement for the purchase of portable seats and is very pleased with the value that will result.

"With the purchase of the seats, Regional Team for greater cost efficiency and the ability to move the seats around our three-stage network to improve the overall efficiency of events," said the spokesman.

Eagles' Tribute Band Starts Free Concert Series

Over three years in the formation of an Eagles tribute band here, The Long Run has done about 300 concerts, most of them at the regional level.

But now they're playing a concert in Maryland in July, a logical progression, said Reggie Fecteau, bass and vocals for the band. "Tribute bands have been really gaining ground in the last two years," he said. "You can go see a band without having to mortgage your house. People want to hear music if done right."

The long run leads to Liberty City "Friday Night Summer Series Tribute" Boca Raton at 7:30 pm June 20 at the Mizner Park Amphitheater. The Grateful Dead, Journey, U2, Jimmy Buffet and Billy Joel tribute band in separate concerts continue until 8 August.

"Some people may know the Eagles through their hits like 'Hotel California', 'Heartache Tonight', 'Desperado' and 'Life in the fast lane,'" Fecteau said by telephone from Saint-Alphonse-De-Rodríguez in Quebec, Canada.

"The Eagles Glenn Frey and we have our french fry," is how the band has joked, adding most of the musicians are locals.

Are the entrances to the audience can be adapted? "We put in sets of two hours and 45 minutes, but will change to some songs," Fecteau said. They also play songs by other musicians who once belonged to the Eagles, as Joe Walsh and Don Henley.

But are not perfectionists, and they did not expect their listeners were sitting still. "When I do 'Hotel California', let them sing the whole verse with us," he said.

"A lot of tribute bands I do exactly what they do,"
he said of the original group. "We want to entertain the audience with a little twist to it and enjoy you."

The band has a good following and lead the celebration of the Fourth of July in Fort Lauderdale, he added. Played the Mizner Park Amphitheater when they were new.

"We've had tribute bands here before," said Chrissy Biagiotti, community relations manager for the city. "They came to one of the shows and one of them approached me and said.’what we do and we are the Eagles of Boca" They had about 3,000 people."

That's one reason why the city is lining tribute bands again.”The music is timeless, and is not hard rock bands. Lots of memories of people are created," he said. "They are good and nostalgic.

"It becomes a fun tradition of having free concerts during the summer and being out and seeing friends and neighbors and families are," he added.

The term does not need legal permission to be a tribute band or the Eagles play music as long as they are playing live, Fecteau said.

"We were actually asked to be the backup for true Eagles Hall of Fame in Florida, but got delayed, and when the Eagles came to Miami played their after party. Neither of them appeared, but his entourage was there. "

20 Years Ago: The Eagles Reunite For Hell Freezes Over Tour

20 years ago today ( May 27, 1994 ) , the Eagles reunited for the first time in 14 years to begin their Hell Freezes Over Tour in Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in Irvine , California, and was at least partly due to the music of country 's biggest stars .

The band split in 1980, after the release of his album ' Eagles Live’. Group members , including Glenn Frey, Don Felder and Don Henley, had been in conflict with each other since their 1979 album , ' The Long Run' , but were contractually obligated to his record company Elektra Records, to record definitive live album before they could dissolve. Unfortunately, at that time, Frey and Henley could not even be in the same room, so they recorded their voices in different studies in different states.

But while the singers 'Hotel California ' was ready to run away from his record; his fans were not so willing to let them go. In 1993, several country artists - including Trisha Yearwood, Diamond Rio, Alan Jackson, Travis Tritt and Tanya Tucker - Eagles recorded a tribute album: The album, which covered some of his biggest hits ' Common Thread the Songs of the Eagles. , Including “Peaceful Easy Feeling ", "I Cannot Tell You Why”, "Heartache Tonight" and "Best of My Love ," soared to the top of the charts and sold over three million units .

Tritt covered his debut single, 'Take It Easy "and asked the band to appear in his video. Was the first time that the group had been together in 13 years, and served as the impetus for the group to consider a meeting.

Only two months later, Frey and Henley lunch with management and agreed to meet formally. They performed live for the first time in April at the Warner Brothers studios in Burbank, California, where they shot 'The Eagles: Hell will freeze " - were given the name because Henley was known for saying that after separation they would band back together " when hell freezes over " - for an MTV special .

They began their Hell Freezes Over tour on May 27 , and spent most of the next two years on the walk , performing some of his most beloved songs, including " Tequila Sunrise ' and' Lyin Eyes ' . 'Your Live ' Hell Freezes Over ' album was released on November 8, 1994, and includes the No. 1 hit, "Love Will Keep Us Alive ‘.

From ' Hell Freezes Over ‘, the Eagles have maintained a band of touring and recording, releasing several albums since, including the 2003 record, ' The Very Best Of “, which sold over five million units in the United States, and a new double album, " Long Road out of Eden ' in 2007. Felder spent seven years with the group before it was fired from the band in 2001.

Eagles' Chip Kelly: Foles is my quarterback

Coach Chip Kelly said yesterday ‘The Eagles’ roster will be placing together this offseason with Nick Foles as the beginning quarterback. Chip Kelly's proof that Foles is his quarterback going forward should not be much of a shock after Foles threw for twenty seven touchdowns & two interceptions in thirteen regular-season matches. After all, Chip Kelly joked previous this year that Foles will be his quarterback for the next thousand years. Naming Foles the first course gives a clearer picture at quarterback than the Eagles had entering last offseason & removed any vagueness about the squad’s most imperative position. Chip Kelly said; obviously, you have got to have one gentleman. Right now, Nick is that one man; however I don't believe Nick has ever been scared of rivalry. He revealed me that the first time we had that.
